Leadership Is Not About Knowing Everything

True IT leadership isn’t about being the smartest person in the room or having every technical answer. It’s about asking the right questions, bridging the gap between technology and business strategy, and empowering team members to solve complex challenges independently. Real impact comes from taking accountability, sharing credit, and building resilient teams that thrive on continuous learning and ownership.

Early in a technology career, we often believe that being the smartest person in the room is the goal.

Leadership teaches us something different.

You don't need to have every answer.

You need to ask the right questions, listen to the people closest to the problem, and create an environment where your team can find better solutions.

As IT leaders, our responsibilities go beyond solving technical problems.

We must:
• Connect technology with business priorities.
• Help our teams make confident decisions.
• Accept accountability when things go wrong.
• Give credit to the people who make things happen.
• Keep learning when the world changes.

A strong leader doesn't build a team that depends on them for every answer. They build a team capable of finding the answers.
